Jennae, here. Part of Decolonizing Filipinx identity is processing Spanish colonization (reign of terror, land grabs, indoctrination, exploitation & much more) of both the motherland: the Philippines, and my original home state: California. My last name is Santosβ quite directly tied to Spanish Christianizing. How do you decolonize the oppressor in your living blood? I'm still learning to unpack this, but I can start with the land I first knew well.
I grew up in a beautiful place widely known as the San Francisco Bay Area, specifically East Bay, more specifically Alameda & Contra Costa counties. *Pre Spanish invasion, in the late 1700s, the Lisjan Chochenyo-speaking people thrived here, the territory of Huchiun. The Spanish generically called them βCostanoanβ (people of the coast) but these tribes were inspired by the Black Power & American Indian movements in the 1960s & 70s to organize & rename themselves Ohlone.
In acknowledgment of the stolen land on which I was born & raised, a percentage of proceeds for this EP, relative to my personal Shuumi Land Tax calculation, will support Sogorea Teβ Land Trust, an urban Indigenous women-led community & rematriation organizationβ returning Indigenous land to Indigenous people.
For real though, this is a very small step support effort & means to spread awareness of such initiatives like rematriation, and I want to learn more too! As someone whose lineage comes from both viciously colonized Indigenous people, and the same oppressor, across an ocean, I, with many Filipinxs raised in the Bay, stand in solidarity with the Ohlone.
Research Indigenous rights groups connected to your hometown, drop em in the comments if you feel called, & if you buy this EP, include it in your note upon purchase so I can support them too. But you also donβt need my music to give or engage!
This EP is just the tipping point of the Devastation of the MF Boss. More to come!
